eBay VeRO for brand owners: how takedowns actually get filed

eBay's Verified Rights Owner program is the front door for brand enforcement on the platform, and it works well when your filings are complete. Register your rights, write notices that name the exact infringement, and track re-listings, because VeRO removes listings, not sellers.

Join VeRO before you need it

The Verified Rights Owner program is free for rights owners, and enrollment takes days, not minutes. eBay reviews your application and the rights you claim, so apply before the first counterfeit wave, not during it. Have your trademark registrations, copyrighted works, or other rights documentation ready. An incomplete application sits in a queue while listings keep selling.

One basis per notice

VeRO notices move fastest when each one states a single, clear basis: this listing uses our registered trademark in the title, or these product photos are our copyrighted images. Mixed claims slow review because each basis gets evaluated separately. If a listing infringes in two ways, file two notices or lead with the strongest one. Precision beats volume.

Link the exact listings

Every notice needs the specific listing URLs, not a shop name or a search query. eBay acts on listings, and a notice that says "this seller has many infringing items" without URLs will stall. Build the habit of capturing the URL, the item number, the listing title, and a screenshot at the same time. Screenshots matter because listings change after a notice goes in.

Expect the re-list

VeRO removes listings. It does not remove sellers, and eBay sellers who lose a listing frequently re-list the same item under a tweaked title within days. Track item numbers, seller IDs, and photo sets across your filings. When the same seller re-lists, reference the prior removal in the new notice. Pattern history is what turns a stream of single removals into a case against a repeat infringer.

Where VeRO falls short

VeRO does not proactively scan for your brand. Nobody at eBay is watching for new counterfeits of your products; the entire program is reactive to your notices. It also does not cover every edge case: listings that are careful with trademark use but sell obvious fakes need copyright or other bases, and gray-market goods sit in a different category from counterfeits entirely. Know which of your problems VeRO solves and which ones need monitoring, documentation, and a different channel.
